Collaboration of Occupational Therapy and Music Therapy!

Music has tremendous benefits in children’s development.  It stimulates many senses (multisensory stimuli) and engages the child in a variety of ways. Music is highly motivating, yet can also have a calming effect.  Music also provides a structure for children to follow instructions with anticipations and opportunities for repetitions to practice target skills.

Because the brain processes music in both hemispheres, music can foster cognitive functioning and be used for remediation of some speech/language skills. (Source: American Music Therapy Association)

Occupational therapy is used to help individuals to become as independent with their daily tasks as possible. In the pediatric realm, children who experience difficulties with motor, social/emotional, self-regulation,
and/or self-care skills can often times benefit significantly from occupational therapy services. As play is a child’s primary means of learning new skills, pediatric occupational therapy focuses on play-based therapeutic activities in order to help each child acquire and improve upon functional skills.

Combining the benefits of music therapy and occupational therapy, children will learn how to positively interact with others, build empathy to understand one another, and work on musical tasks together as a group/pair to learn daily and (pre) academic concepts.
